There's a good story in the Boston Globe Sunday magazine today about the VA healthcare system, and the difficulty veterans and their families have navigating it. It's also filled with what sounds like a fair amount of bureaucratic denial about how fabulous the system really is, which contradicts the admittedly anecdotal stories of those who are using it. A national TV news program tonight mentioned that over 80,000 people responded to Bob Woodruff's story about traumatic brain injuries and healthcare system he entered after the Iraq war. My guess is, a lot of those responses came from disgruntled patients and family members, who had stories to tell about their own care. Thankfully, some private concerns, such as Casa Colina Center for Rehabilitation in Southern California, seem to be success stories. (Anyone who's followed the story of returning injured vet Corey Briest can see how much better his recovery seems to be once he exited the VA healthcare system in favor of Casa Colina). However...so much more needs to be done for the combat veterans and their families...
