Here's an interesting quote that helps to define the Vietnam experience, although the principle involved is the same irrespective of the war. More combat = more chances to develop PTSD, as we've already covered in an earlier post, linked here. It's important to learn from the combat veterans in your life just how much they actually experienced, even if they and you don't want to share the actual details.
"During World War II, the Sixth Marine Regiment served four years in the Pacific but only engaged the enemy for about four weeks. In Vietnam, the combat soldier typically served a 12-month tour of duty but was exposed to hostile fire almost every day of his tour."
Source: Article called "Vietnam Veterans, U.S. Crime and Prison," by John J. O'Connor in the New York Times, July 15, 1982. The quotation is from the narration of a movie called "Vietnam Requiem."
